Reseller or VPS
Hey guys,
I could really do with some help, i am looking for a new host and can't decide whether i need a VPS or whether a Reseller account will do ? Also i then need to find a replacement for my current host dsvr.co.uk (a bit too pricey).
Requirements (primary domain = small but developing e-commerce site)
3Gb of space
10Gb of bandwith allowance
PHP & MySQL
SSL
FRIENDLY, Reliable, speedy support
Unlimited domains / sub domains
preferably a UK company & uk server
if i go the VPS route i would want a managed package
Upto £4-500 per year
Current shortlist - any comments
resellerzoom (UK - mkhosting.co.uk)
clook.net (not sure about the overselling)
SolarVPS
transnexis.com

Unless you want to run custom software or something where security and isolation is important (ie. handling card transactions) then it sounds like a reseller would be a better bet. You have all the flexibility of managing your own sub-accounts, packages, etc without the hassle of managing a Linux webserver which, if you're not experienced in the various software, could lead to problems and downtime.
Hope that helps .

A little confused by that, we are nothing to do with resellerzoom.

Sorry, i just assumed you were as i typed resellerzoom.co.uk into my browser and got redirected to you.
based on the fact a reseller account should do the shortlist is now
clook.net (current fav)
mkhosting.co.uk (current second choice)
uk.resellerzoom.com (UK data center but US based ???)
2host.co.uk
Some of the hosts admit to overselling, could that be a problem ?
Also it would be nice to be able to talk to support on the phone if needed - does anyone know of such a host ?

With overselling, in my opinion why pay for what you wont be able to use?
Most Hosts offer phone support.

In comparison with some competitors we are not that cheap. We charge what we consider a fair price. We do not oversell, you can use 100% of what you pay for.

Overselling is an interesting one....ever seen a phone network where you don't end up in queues on a TV phone-in...ever seen a supermarket never have to ditch leftover stock...etc?
One art of business is working out the balance between what you can sell customers, what you can reasonably provide them, and what they'll actually use, no matter what type of business the business is
And, of course, there are also businesses where you pay for exactly what you want to get and expect to receive it - that's why hosts have premium ranges and, for example, ISPs do business lines which cost a lot more than their standard consumer lines (they're not contended)
Don't be sucked into the WHT world of kiddy hosts with little idea what they're talking about - and equally, of course, question offerings which seem extreme - but most of the time, the issue of overselling is left to the host to balance: it's only an issue to the customer when it becomes apparent, ie if the host is overcrowding their servers
I'd suggest that a reseller hosting package will suit you fine for your needs, unless you need custom software or will be handling sensitive data

We can offer a range of VPS and Reseller hosting services in the UK (faster connections for UK users) or US (cheaper with the current exchange rate). If you drop us an email via sales[at]transnexis.com we can help find the most suitable solution for your needs.

Neither, a high-end shared hosting account on a decent host should more than exceed your requirements.

For those requirements, especially the space and bandwidth, a reseller will be sufficient for you. Although if you want custom PHP settings, or want to install other softwares, your better with a VPS. I recommend you have a shared or reseller account at first, until you are sure you need a VPS.

I am following the same opinion as the crowd, it looks like all you need is a reseller account. You might be able to save yourself a little money by lowering your domain requirements and just upgrade as you need it.

The problem is finding a decent reseller account that is reliable and has good support. Since you're Linux it might be a bit easier.
