    Syslog Server

What are people using these days?

Needs to do alerting etc based on certain events and be fairly easy to use

Currently eyeing up Syslog Server Windows - Log Server | Kiwi Syslog Server

Don't - it is junk. Used to use it here and it was fine with a small DB. However there are no DB management tools built in, so you need to be handy at a MySQL (or whatever you use) command line to truncate and compress etc. And if you don't keep the DB size down the service just fails to start and sulks. Solarwinds who are now the owner don't give a **** support plan or not as they just want you to upgrade to one of their products..

    We no longer use it

No wonder they were recommending we move to it then if they own it. Assuming as it's a Windows product it would run on MsSQL in which case we have plenty of clusers to run it against and handy DBAs but if it can't manage it self then forget it.

So I'm a big fan of a good ol' fashioned ELK stack... However, am also trialling the Fortinet Log Analyser stuff at the moment, and its pretty cool.

We are implementing ELK however I am looking to avoid anything too homebrew for network infrastructure and also needs to have alerting which ELK doesn't do out the box

ELK is a well recognised [protective] monitoring stack. You could bolt on Watcher (https://www.elastic.co/products/watcher) if you're not feeling playing with logstash and getting alerts out etc. I'm relatively happy with custom stuff on top of Zabbix, but PagerDuty makes some lives easier too.

ELK all the way. You can combine it with Riemann if you want alerting
