    Getting a new TV

Thinking of upgrading to a new TV, thinking 42" is about right...
Seen this: Lg 42" LCD Televisions 42LH3000

    Anyone here a TV buff?
Was thinking DVI->HDMI from the Mac, and the usual V+ or Sky+ HD depending on what's available at my new place.

I've got to admit, i like my Sonys - currently got a Sony 40W4000, and use it with Sky+ HD - its stunning.

I echo what Leigh says, got a 46W4500 here and its a great set. The LG sets are ok but nothing amazing imo

4*W4*00's look pretty good, but tech specs for tech specs, look the same tbh.
Don't need the USB or Card Slot, and not too fussed about sound quality, taking the Digital Out into 5.1

    Hmmmmmmm...

Time to get yourself what sound&vision mag or similar where they splashed out on the reviews and choose wisely.. I know its not mega bucks these days, but for a fiver on the mag plus a bit of froogling or similar for the prices.

Even if I won't commit to buying the "best buy" its nice to know what your money is getting from a relatively independent viewpoint and what the potential limitations are on a #3 recommended or similar. And more to the point, ensuring you avoid the "don't buys"

Friend of mine bought a Panasonic v10 and the picture on that is breathtaking. I don't watch enough TV to justify that sort of spend but comparing his setup to my own you can see the extra money at work.

Out of interest, and this is because I'm thinking of upgrading shortly, what do you define as "the picture"? Are you talking "colour", "definition", "contrast"? Or is it just a general "feel" for it being good?

I'm really not sure I can be bothered to put up with another Comet/Currys Saturday boy hanging on my shoulder whilst I explain to them what HDMI is and repeatedly ask if they have anything that we can test the screen with...

I can't comment comment on the TV, however I know you like football so maybe a plasma TV would be a better choice?.

I have recently changed to Virgin V+ HD from sky and it offers so much more. Perhaps check out a place called "AV forums" there are plenty of TV buff's there.

When you say V+ HD offers more - what extra do you get?

Well for a start the extra tuner built in so you can watch 1 channel and record 2, Music/Movies/TV on demand. TV catch up and BBCi player all built in. you can plug an external drive in the V+ box to record to external devices.

And its not affected by the really bad wind we get :P

How many HD channels do you actually get? I always thought Sky had more, but never really looked into it that hard.

When we looked into Virgin media about 5 months ago there was 1 HD channel compared to Skys 25+?

Yep same here, I have virgin media and the hd offerings are pathetic.

Plus the V+ boxes run quite a bit slower than skys.
