Post Dell to stuff hypervisors in flash memory

    From el Reg

The rumor mill suggests that Dell will launch this new box as the ESX Appliance in a 2U, two-socket form. The box has been said to have support for up to 256GB of memory, 4 integrated NICs, 4 expansion card slots and two hard drives. And we hear the system will run on AMD's four-core Barcelona chips.
Suspected to be VMWare or XenSource. Either way these sound bloody marvelous.

Wouldn't like to see the power consumption on that, eek!

Well, it may not be such a problem. 256GB of ram means something line 256 VMs, if not even more. I think that evergy wise we are talking about a good power to VM ratio.

That's still a pretty fat power consumption...

Welllllll Let's say that your standard package is a 1GB ram box, let's say that this box pulls 2Amps for the system and 0.1Amp per GB, that comes at 28Amps. Let's round it to 30 to be on the safe side.

Now we know that an entry level box pulls some 0.4Amps, 256 of those is like 102Amps. I would say that the power savings may very well be there, leaving ample space for a decent SAN.

No doubt it saves space and power and kicks @$$ but as Joel said, it'll be a very empty rack that it sits in.

Manchester (IFL) supplies 5 and 7amps by default, 10 or 12 seems to be considered as power hungry!

Only a few weeks ago Ray (Teledata) asked if there was demand for a 64amp rack and everyone concluded that 32amps was a much better option. I wouldn't like to consider running 28 or 30 amps on a 32amp breaker.

256GB of ram and only 8 Cores? Nah

No doubt it will cost extreme ammounts of money. First its Dell and secondly its targeted at virtualisation customers which have like LOADS of money. (apparantly)

Well, there is a memory intensive application that would benefit from that beast: root DNS: less you swap, the better the performance
